Located in Laurel Springs, about 30 minutes from West Jefferson, New River State Park, is a great place for nature lovers. The park is named after the New River, which was recognized as a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976.

Bring binoculars and join a ranger for a short and easy hike along the river. Wear sturdy shoes, dress according to the weather and bring water.

Flight of the American Woodcock
Check out the amazing courtship flight of the American Woodcock. This bird is perfectly camouflaged and rarely heard. The exception occurs in late winter and early Spring when the male birds perform dizzying courtship displays. Strutting his dance moves on the ground and in the air, a male Woodcock will serenade several on looking females.
Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies.
