If you looked at Todd, NC on a map, it might be a faint dot – over-shadowed by larger towns in northwestern North Carolina like West Jefferson or Boone. Those who visit this small town in southwestern Ashe County quickly discover there is much more than initially meets the eye.
Todd is the perfect location for those looking for a scenic riverside cabin, or a beautiful mountain-side home overlooking the ancient New River. Those living in Todd enjoy a quiet and relaxing mountain lifestyle. There’s no reason to worry about traffic or road noise in this charming mountain town. Even with Todd’s relatively “off-the-beaten-path” location, residents can be in the towns of Boone or West Jefferson within 20 minutes via NC Highway 194. Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and come experience this relaxing Blue Ridge town yourself.
Todd’s main thoroughfare, Railroad Grade Road, is a lightly-traveled and low-speed road that winds its way past quiet farms and scattered homes along the New River. Aptly named, the road follows an old railroad bed along the South Fork of the New River, providing an ideal recreational route and multiple access points to the New River. Railroad Grade Road is approximately 10 miles long and connects Todd to the smaller town of Fleetwood and US Highway 221. Due to the flat terrain on Railroad Grade Road, this area is particularly popular for cyclists who need a break from the otherwise steep hills in the mountains of North Carolina.
There are multiple parks in or near the town of Todd. Located just 3 miles “downstream” on Railroad Grade Road from NC Highway 194, Todd Island Park is a popular destination for all visitors. In the warmer months, visitors can dip their feet in the New River to cool off before completing their journey on Railroad Grade Road. Short walking paths are also available for visitors to explore Todd Island Park. Several areas are available for fishing, or simply enjoying a relaxing afternoon by the river.
Cook Memorial Park in Todd is another popular place for visitors and locals to gather. It is located directly across from the old Todd General Store building. The park offers areas for picnicking by the tranquil New River, and a stage for a variety of performances. In the summer, there is a weekly concert series showcasing talented musicians often performing old songs of Appalachia. Todd is also known for its 4th of July Liberty Parade with elaborate decorations, giant puppets, and extraordinary costumes. Cook Memorial Park is the ending point for this eclectic parade.
Like many towns along the Blue Ridge in North Carolina, Todd saw its busiest days in the early 1900s with the timber boom. In 1910, the Carolina-Virginia Railway began construction to extend their railway from West Jefferson towards Todd. By the time the railroad reached Todd, the bustling timber town had three mills, seven stores, and two hotels. But the Great Depression came along in the 1930s, and it was no longer profitable for the railroad company to run their train to Todd (toddnc.org).
Today, there are several thriving businesses in Todd. Bicycle rentals, river-craft rentals, a delicious bakery, and a mercantile store featuring arts and crafts are a few of the options available. The historic Todd General Store is planned to be re-opened in July of 2019. A wide variety of recreational activities such as cycling, fishing, canoeing, and nearby hiking trails means there’s something for just about everyone.
