Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Northwestern North Carolina High Country is the lovely picturesque town of West Jefferson, a small mountain town with a personality all its own. In early spring, the charming main street and back street come alive with the hustle and bustle of quaint shops, a twice-weekly Farmer's and Artisans Market, and a variety of restaurants sure to please the taste of any palate, from breakfast to dinner - with coffee breaks in the morning at Bohemia Gallery or the Coffee Shop and ice-cream and lemonade in the afternoon. Weekends are gallery crawls and music in the Back Street Park in downtown Historic West Jefferson.
While walking around our charming downtown area, be sure to look for the town's collection of more than a dozen outdoor murals painted by local and other North Carolina artists on the sides of buildings. When you turn the next corner, you're sure to be delighted by the larger than life images that illustrate the history of the area and unique aspects of its character and personality. The downtown mural project began in 1966 when McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, commissioned local artist Jack Young to create the mural History of Ashe Through the Ages. With the continuing support of Ashe County Arts Council, private citizens and other organizations, the mural project has since expanded to include the famous Virginia Creeper, Spring Wildflowers on Mt. Jefferson, New River Traditions, Weathered Pines, Wings and Things, Blue Ridge Parkway and Train at Jefferson Station and more. Among a favorite is the brilliant and colorful landscape, Somewhere in Ashe, depicting the High Country in the autumn leaf season.
Great entertainment is offered year-round by the Ashe County Little Theater, which performs a fine roster of four to five productions annually.
And how many towns can offer you Christmas two times a year? We certainly welcome you to visit Ashe County for Christmas in December in a classic snow-covered rural country setting that brings the nostalgia of simpler times to mind. In December, West Jefferson offers their version of an Old Time Christmas, but you are also invited to enjoy West Jefferson's Christmas in July street festival held every year on Fourth of July weekend. Sponsored by the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association to promote the local Choose-and-Cut Christmas tree industry, the annual event offers wonderful opportunities to learn about the different types of Christmas trees, to make plans to come back to the area in November to get your own special holiday tree, and to get a head start on your holiday gift shopping by visiting the numerous local artisans and crafts people who sell their wares from gaily decorated booths during the Christmas in July Festival.
