West Jefferson NC Christmas in July, 2023

  • West Jefferson NC Christmas in July, 2023

Ashe County Christmas Tree Growers Association Sponsored the First Christmas in July Festival in 1987.

The first Christmas in July festival began in 1987 and was sponsored by the Ashe County Tree Growers Association.  This event began as a promotional strategy by creating a platform for tree growers to display their Christmas trees and connect with potential buyers.  This is when the idea of hosting festivals in downtown West Jefferson, NC was envisioned.  These festivals have since become an annual tradition, bringing locals and tourists together to celebrate the holiday spirit in the North Carolina Mountains in summertime.

Over the years, the Christmas in July festival has grown in popularity, and has evolved to include a wide range of attractions bringing thousands of visitors to downtown West Jefferson.  The success of these festivals has not only helped boost the local economy, but has also put Ashe County on the map as a premier destination for the Frasier fir tree.

Ashe County, NC Top Producer of the Frasier Fir Tree

Today, Ashe County is recognized as the largest county in the United States for producing the Frasier fir tree, widely regarded as the quintessential Christmas tree.  The Christmas tree growers of Ashe County take immense pride in their craft. The Fraser Fir tree, which is known for its vibrant green color and sturdy branches, is highly sought after for its symmetrical shape and excellent needle retention, making it a popular choice for Christmas trees.

As the tradition continues to evolve and flourish, more people are drawn to the town of West Jeferson.  The success is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Ashe County tree growers and the Ashe County community, as they have successfully carved out a niche for themselves in the holiday celebrations calendar.

In 2022, the festival received the designation of “Finest Festival” by Carolina Country Magazine and continues as being the top event in the High Country.

The 2023 Festival will begin on Friday, June 20, at 5:30 pm and continue Saturday, July 1, at 10am.

This year’s events will bring the top local music performers and others from both Carolinas and Virginia.  The entertainment will commence at 5:30 pm on the large stage located in the square in West Jefferson, the focal point of the event.

On Saturday, July 1, booths will open at 10am and the music will continue throughout the day on Saturday.  The town’s eateries will be open, shop owners will offer specials, and there will be opportunities to purchase many unique gifts and clothing including Christmas decorations, handmade jewelry, pottery and much more.
