Calling all bluegrass and fiddler fans and players! This coming weekend the Ashe County Arts Council will be sponsoring the 47th annual Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention and music competition for both adults and youth at Ashe County Park in Jefferson. For those interested in camping, the park’s camping area opens at 8am on Friday.
Friday night, July 22nd kicks off with an old-fashioned Appalachian Barn Dance at 7pm at Ashe Park’s Lakeview Shelter. Zephyr Lightning Bolts and Strictly Strings with Cecil Gurganus will provide the music, and caller John Turner will be calling reels, big circles, four couple figures, flat foot and two-step dances. All levels of dancers including beginners are welcome!
Saturday, July 23rd will serve as competition day. Gates open at 10am; youth competition starts at 11:00am; adult individual instruments start at 2:00pm; dance competitions at 6:00pm; and band competitions at 7:30pm.
Tasty food concessions include bbq pork sandwiches and plates, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, desserts and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition local arts and crafts vendors will be on hand selling beautiful wares such as quilts, handmade soaps, woodwork items and more. Proceeds from the convention go to support Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM).
Cost: Admission is $5 for Friday night only; $10 for Saturday only; or $15 for both days. Tickets can be purchased at the site or by calling the Ashe County Arts Council at 336-846-2787.
