The Appalachian’s Department of Theatre & Dance and the Hayes School of Music presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler Sweeney on April 13, 14 and 14 at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.
This tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world. The show’s Broadway premiere received eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Seeking vengeance for crimes committed against him, Sweeney Todd returns to London, where the road to revenge leads him to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up... and the carnage has only just begun!
Sweeney Todd marks the second recent co-production among the Department of Theatre and Dance, Hayes School of Music and the Office of Arts and Cultural Programs. In 2014, Kiss Me, Kate! involved 104 different Appalachian students pursuing 38 different academic majors within all nine colleges and schools that comprise the university. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
