Summer Art Exhibits at the Turchin Center in Boone

  • Summer Art Exhibits at the Turchin Center in Boone

Hungry for a little art viewing? Here’s a roundup of a few exhibits on view at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University in Boone. The center provides a home for world-class visual arts programming and is the largest facility of its kind in the region.

In the Main Gallery through 12/2/2017:

Circles of Influence highlights Barbara Hardy and Bob Ray, artists who have been living and working together for over twenty-five years sharing a deeply rewarding intimate, creative and artistic bond. The exhibition brings together their artwork for only the second time in a two-person installation in the Turchin Center’s Main Gallery. The influence the artists have on one another and their shared love of rich texture and layered patterns will be immediately apparent even though each artist’s practice and techniques are unique and quite different from one other.

In the Mezzanine Gallery through 10/7/2017:

Images of Social Justice from the Segura Arts Studio illustrates the history of Segura Art Studio by describing its mission of working with underrepresented artists through their published artwork. Master printer, Joseph Segura founded the Segura Publishing Company in Tempe, Arizona in 1981. The studio was renamed Segura Arts Studio when it was welcomed into the University of Notre Dame in 2013. The studio has played an important role in contemporary printmaking with an initial focus on collaboration with artist-printmakers and on the technical aspects and aesthetics of various print processes. The initial focus was expanded to include artists whose creative work had a strong political message. Segura was drawn to marginalized artists: women, African and Native Americans as well as Latino artists and the studio continues to emphasize the importance of collaborative practice as well as education and activist.

In Gallery A through 9/9/2017:

IconiPop: Michael Turchin: Artist’s Statement - As a society, we are driven by the notion of celebrity and pop culture. We marvel at its grandeur and excess yet we equally revel in its pitfalls and toxicity. I am most certainly no different. From my earliest years, I was mesmerized by my parents' old magazine and album covers. At the time, the figures depicted in these photos were merely just that—figures. I couldn't tell you their names or why they seemed iconic, but these images had a great effect on me. My ICONIPOP series explores the realm of celebrity, popular culture, and society as a whole through some of the world's most recognizable images.

Hours:
Tuesday – Thursday: 10am-6pm
Saturday: 12pm – 8pm
