It’s time once again for the annual Boon Heritage Festival, to be held on October 9th. Hosted by the nonprofit Southern Appalachian Historical Association, this beloved fall event celebrates Appalachian traditions, history and heritage.
This fun-filled day combines 18th century living history demonstrations from colonial/Revolutionary times, craft vendors, music jam sessions, kid’s activities, live music and storytelling, food (such as delicious deep-fried Scotch eggs) and a raffle.
The festival takes place on the gorgeous wooded grounds of the Hickory Ridge Living History Museum. While at the festival, you can also tour the cabins belonging to the museum and learn about the local settlement period, when people came to this area known as the “Lost Province” after the American Revolution.
Living history demonstrations will include:
- The Pewterer - molded pewter eating utensils and toy soldiers, etc.
- The Fiber Guild - spinning and weaving wool
- Bob Holder - flintknapping
- Flintlock Rifle Firing
- Leatherwork
- Tatting
Plus lots of fun-filled action for children both young and old such as:
- A mock archeological dig
- Scarecrow building
- Pumpkin Carving
- Cornhusk Crafts
- A musical instrument “petting zoo,” that includes fiddles, mandolins, banjos and other mountain instruments
