Top-notch songwriters will give 11 hours of instruction across various levels of songwriting. Add jams, a beautifully produced student showcase and evening concert with instructors to fill a weekend of songwriting inspiration and skill that will keep you writing.
The program is in honor of Ola Belle Reed, a NEA National Heritage Award winning songwriter and performer from Lansing, NC. Ola Belle played banjo and guitar and wrote songs that required an understanding of the musical traditions of Appalachia while embracing contemporary themes and issues. Her music garnered from country, bluegrass and folk fans. Del McCoury and Marty Stewart had hits with her songs, and literally hundreds of folk musicians have recorded them. The Dust-To-Digital label released a book and two-CD package about Ola Belle and her wide musical influence on others. The venerable instructors this year include:
CATHY FINK: Artistic Director, GRAMMY Award winner, John Lennon Songwriting Contest Winner, multiple songwriting contest winner.
ALICE GERRARD: International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame Artist/Songwriter, GRAMMY nominee, toured extensively with Ola Belle Reed.
SAM GLEAVES: Young Appalachian artist and tradition bearer, Folk Arts Education Director of the Hindman Settlement School.
