The New River Marathon is back! Race weekend 2017 will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 5th and 6th. This year’s runners (and walkers) can participate in four different races: the marathon, half marathon, 5K and 1-mile fun run.
Since 2010, the venue for the New River Marathon was a dormant field in Todd. However, this year the New River Marathon will take place at the High County Fair Grounds on Ruby Green Road in Boone. The new location, promises to continue to allow race participants to soak in the beauty of the New River and the High Country, for which the event is renowned.
Note, walkers are welcome in the half-marathon, 5K and 1-mile fun run.
The 1-mile fun run, which is run completely within the fairgrounds, is at 6 p.m. on May 5th during packet pick-up/registration.
The marathon, at 7:30 a.m., half-marathon, at 7:45 a.m. and 5K, at 8 a.m., will be run Saturday, May 6th. USA Track and Field certification, which enables the marathon to serve as a Boston Marathon qualifying event, is in process for all three races.
Even though the race courses will change this year, much will remain the same. Each race will have many miles along the banks of the New River.
There will be live bluegrass music at the finish line and various local foods will be served as well.
