August in Ashe County is a great time of year to head to Mount Jefferson and experience this beautiful natural wilderness area in all its glory.
Rising abruptly to more than 1,600 feet above the surrounding landscape, Mount Jefferson is often first viewed at a distance from the Blue Ridge Parkway and is a national natural landmark with a rich history. Five hiking trails allow exploration of rare geology and plant communities in Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, including a child-friendly TRACK trail and a strenuous scramble along the mountain’s ridgeline. Overlooks offer vistas into neighboring states. Picnic grounds with shelter combine scenic views with cool summer temperatures and breezes.
Here’s what’s happening this month:
Adventure Night Hike
Meet the park ranger for a one-mile round-trip night hike into the darkness along Mt. Jefferson’s famous ridgeline. They group will seek out amazing views, observe stars, and the shimmering lights from town 1600 feet below us. Bring a small flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Parts of this hike are considered strenuous, Appalachian night hikes are challenging. Children over 7 are welcome but must be closely supervised.

The views on Mt. Jefferson are legendary and always changing with the seasons. Come up for an hour of creativity, and try your hand at painting. A free canvas to take home will be provided for each participant. Tempera paints and brushes will also be provided as long as supplies last. No experience necessary. The 4th Annual Downhill Race

Head to Mount Jefferson State Natural Area for their 4th annual Downhill Race! Racers from all over come out for this event. Bring your families and watch these folks race down the mountain on a 2 miles course at 55+ mph!
