West Jefferson offers a Lively Charming Downtown with Welcoming People
The town offers numerous opportunities to participate in or enjoy cultural events and the arts, including an art school, street murals, and art galleries. Shopping is an adventure with unique shops and a nice selection of eateries. During the summer months, there are gallery crawls, live music in the Backstreet Park, a summer antique show and Christmas in July festival. For the Holiday Season, the town sponsors an Old Fashion Christmas and a Holiday Parade. Ashe Civic Center, located in West Jefferson, has ongoing music programs and is home to the Ashe County Little Theater.
Downtown gets a New Facelift
Over the past two years, the town successfully rejuvenated the downtown with street lights, green spaces, and removed most of the downtown traffic lights making the downtown more attractive while creating a pedestrian friendly downtown. The Bowie Park, which is in the town of West Jefferson is now connected to the town by adding walkways to a pocket park, which is located on the back street in downtown, just a block from the Farmer’s Market that was successfully added to the town just a few years ago.
The town is surrounded by mountains. One of the largest is Mount Jefferson State Park with an elevation of 4,660 feet above sea level and containing 539 natural acres. The town is in the shadows of this natural area, looming 1600 hundred feet above the town.
The lifestyles of the town are a combination of Appalachia mountain heritage with a contemporary laid-back flair. You won’t find a better combination anywhere. The people who live in Ashe County are friendly mountain folk who go along with their daily lives, welcoming newcomers while celebrating their mountain heritage and accepting new ideas and changes in their area.
