Old Man Winter is on his way out, and spring is just around the corner, officially arriving on March 21st! In Ashe County, many families have a tradition of welcoming spring by attending the Youth Derby day, which is traditionally held every last Saturday in March. So this year, on Saturday, March 25th, youth in the age groups of 1-6, 7-11 and 12-18 will have the change to cast their fishing poles.
Sponsored by the North Carolina Wildlife Commission (which stocks the Ashe County Park trout pond with trout, catfish, sunfish and bluegill three times a year), Derby Day is held rain or shine or even if it snows makes an appearance!
The Ashe County Park gates will open on Trout Derby Day, this March 21st at 7am, and the event itself lasts until 12 noon. Prizes will be awarded to those who catch the heaviest fish in each age division. You can bring your own poles and bait. If you don’t have, the Ashe County Recreation Department will provide them! What a great way to get everyone outdoors in anticipation of the Spring season!
