As the days grow shorter and the nights get longer, we start to transition from summer into fall. Here are some of our favorite autumn activities in Ashe County that you should check out before the leaves all fall from the trees and the Christmas tree season begins.
Take a Hike in Ashe County
Fall is the perfect time to hit the trails in the North Carolina Mountains. Each region of the High Country has something special to offer when it comes to experiencing the beauty of nature up close and personal. Just to name a few that are in Ashe County that we recommend for hiking
Mount Jefferson State Park
Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area overlooks the town of West Jefferson. There are overlooks that onto the surrounding landscape and long-range views as far as the eyes can see into Tennessee and Virginia. There are hiking trails and a picnic area. Information on the Park found here.
New River State Park located in Jefferson along the banks of the New River
The park covers 3,323 acres in the protected New River watershed. Located near Jefferson, North Carolina, it covers 3,323 acres in the protected New River watershed. Here you will find hiking trails, picnic, and camping areas – a great adventure in September. More information found here.
Pond Mountain – Blue Ridge Conservative
Pond Mountain is one of the most beautiful areas in the High Country, and only a 30-minute drive from West Jefferson. Protected by Blue Ridge Conservative and rising 5,000 feet above sea level the 2,900 acres of open spaces of huge meadows provide excellent hiking and horseback riding. New River Early Morning Journey in late September
It is not too late in the season to take an all-day canoe ride down the famed New River in Ashe County. The air is crisp in early morning and if it is incredibly early, you can observe the golden harvest moon as it disappears below the horizon. Stop in one of the New River Parks for a picnic lunch, then a short hike. Continue your journey on the New River until early evening and observe the sunsets that are so brilliant in the month of September.
Old Barn Winery
Located just out of West Jefferson is Old Barn Winery. Spend an afternoon on the farm enjoying the country surroundings, fine wine, and music. You will be pleasantly surprised by all this farm has to offer. Be sure to visit their website for the event listings.
Apple Picking in late September
Ashe County located in the heart of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, making it the perfect place to go apple picking! This is one of the best times to visit one of these orchards to pick apples because they are in season during this month. Be expecting to see rows upon rows of apple trees, ready to pick. You can either bring your own bags or purchase them for a small fee at the orchard.
On the Streets in West Jefferson, NC
After you have spent several days in nature, head on to the most talked about small town in the North Carolina Mountains, West Jefferson. Celebrated for the arts, this small town has an arts district, public art including a mural trail of local scenes, the Virginia Creeper trains of long ago, and numerous art galleries.
In the Fresh, crisp air with remnants of summer and hints of fall, fresh new fall clothing options to freshen up the wardrobe. There is an abundance of new styles of clothing for sale in the shops in West Jefferson. Three of our favorite places to shop are Pam’s Boutique, Becky N Company on Jefferson Avenue and Madi’s Clothing and Accessories on East 2nd. Street.
A journey around West Jefferson will be enjoying as there are many art galleries, antique shops, and unique shops not found elsewhere. Many shops feature items made by the local community.
If you are a cheese connoisseur, you must visit the Ashe County Cheese Plant where you can purchase a large variety of cheeses freshly made. You can also observe cheese making if your visit coincides with their schedule.
Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Craft Beer Brewing
Everyone must eat, and in West Jefferson there are many eateries with a variety of choices that is too numerous to mention.
If you like craft beer, Boondocks Brewing – Brew Hous on S. Jefferson Avenue and New River Brewing on 3rd. Avenue are both in the town limits of West Jefferson.
Check out the Backstreet Park for concerts that may be happening on a Friday evening or a gallery crawl featuring local arts.
Ashe County Farmer’s Market
West Jefferson’s Backstreet will begin to offer pumpkins, pears, apples, figs, potatoes and all the autumn produce we have been waiting patiently for. The Farmer’s Market also offers fall flowers, handmade crafts, jellies, and jams freshly made by the local folks in and around Ashe County.
